Other Characters Played: Kairi and Serah Farron

Character: Red (Ruby)
Series: Once Upon A Time
Age: 23
History: I sort of found someone in myself that was more than I expected.
Canon Point: After taking the castle to save Charming (James), shortly after Snow White leaves to go and see Regina alone (This is pre-curse, so Red will have no recollection of being Ruby in Storybrooke).

Personality: Overall, Red is a kind and friendly soul. She is always quick to offer help to those who need it - when Snow is hiding in the chicken coop, even though she attempted to steal the eggs and doesn't give a true name, Red still extends a hand to her and doesn't question Snow about what led her to be there. She sensed she was in danger, and Red did what comes natural to her, which is to offer any help she can. This acceptance makes Red particularly likeable to others, as she doesn't tread where she's not wanted unless the person in question wishes to tell her. She is quick on the uptake, has a sharp wit and has loyalty to spare. To those she calls friend or family, Red will never turn away from or abandon, being utterly selfless towards. Family and friendship is incredibly important to her, due to the loss of her parents at a young age, and the loss of Peter. If you need someone and fall into that category, Red will be there. She is determined to protect the people she loves, more than ever.

Trust is something that takes some time to build with Red. Whilst she is quick to offer a friendly hand, this is not an immediate, no holds barred friendship. She's not going to lay all her problems out on the table for you right away. That's not to say she is averse to revealing her nature to others as a principle - in the Enchanted Forest, stranger things have happened, stranger creatures do exist - but moreso due to the fact she knows that to some, she is seen as someone who must be disposed of. What can be said of Red, is that if a friend trusts another person completely, such as Snow trusting James (Charming), Red in turn trusts them as well, and doesn't doubt their intention. She revealed her nature to James to buy him time when the knights of the kingdom pursued him, so he could ride on and find Snow.

Despite growing up in a town that suffered at the bloodthirst of the wolf, Red remained somewhat innocent and naive. She was never naive enough to not understand danger, or be a stranger to death and despair, as her parents died when she was young and the wolf's ravaged corpses were not something she didn't see. Mainly, through it all, she remained somewhat innocent and lighthearted, but since discovering the truth about her heritage, this has changed drastically. Much of her previous innocence has gone. She has to deal with the fact that she was the one taking away lives, she was the one scaring the town, and she was the one to murder the person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. Peter's death is particularly poignant in that, not only because it was at her hand, but because she ignored Granny's warnings - her mistake in believing he was the wolf, in recklessly and foolishly attempting to find out who it was, was what lead to his death. To some, this weight would crush them, but for Red, she has accepted it, and become a lot tougher as a person because of it. By beginning to overcome it and control her curse, Red has gained confidence in herself. She has not become bitter from it, but she has suffered loss, true loss and her own hand, and that leaves its scars. It takes a lot to get through the thick skin she's grown, death no longer horrifies her, and she has become a lot more blunt and less subtle when talking to others. If she has a point, she's going to make it, and it's going to be heard, especially if she can save a person she calls friend from unhappiness. She is not a fan of avoidance nor sitting around, and prefers the head on approach. If she can fix something, Red will do it without question.

As with maturing past her innocence, much of Red's rebellious streak has gone. Whilst what she did appeared harmless, in the end, it caused a lot of pain and hurt for those around her. Where once she saw everything that Granny told her as an attempt to keep her trapped, she know sees it as common sense, accepting the ideas for herself (that's not to say she's not stubborn when she feels wronged, mind). When once she did not wear the cloak, now she never forgets to. Where once she craved adventure and excitement, now she does not. It still stirs her, but it's not something she will rebel to get, or recklessly jump head first into danger to attain. She calmly judges what lies before her, and trusts her instincts, which pull her through.

Skills and Abilities:

Bow: Red is able to handle a bow and use it effectively in defensive situations, having lived in a forest where this kind of skill is a necessity for tracking and hunting.

Werewolf: For a time, Red was unaware that the wolf that plagued her village during wolfstime was in fact herself. Even though she transforms in regulation with the moon (so when it's full and the two days either side), this is not as a result of being bitten herself, but being passed on genetically - her mother was a werewolf, as was her grandmother, which is where it originates.

There is one thing that stops her from transforming and keeping ahold of her true self, which is her red cloak, that after finding out the truth, she always wears. The cloak itself is enchanted and prevents the transformation. Likewise, if she were to transform, if someone threw the cloak on top of her wolf form she would change back into a human. As a wolf, she is somewhat immune to damage: even if someone were to get past her agility and stealth, a weapon would do her little damage and she would still come out the victor. When she was hit with a silver tipped bolt by Granny, this does not kill her, but merely drop and stun her long enough for her and Snow to cover her with the cloak. When she returned to human form, the wound was gone.

To begin with, Red remembered none of her time as a wolf. The wolf was a very distinct entity from her, cunning and clever, showing near human intelligence when being pursued and fighting against those who hunted it down. At present, this has changed some. Red can now remember most of her time as a wolf. If she changes to protect someone, she is able to distinguish who is her target and whom she intends to protect, most likely so a repeat of Peter's sacrifice will never happen. Secondly, she is also somewhat more aware of her humanity as a wolf - when Snow plans to take the castle, Red howls to alert that the guards on the perimeter have been taken out by herself, indicating she retains a little of herself, and her memories, to recall this. Her mastership over the wolf within her is still shaky, though, and is not something she would rely on too heavily or leave up to chance. If there was another option, she may decide to take it so as not to take the chance, though more importantly, if she was not sure she could control herself in the given situation. She is well aware her curse is not something to be trifled with.

Smell, hearing and ability to track: A pay off with becoming a wolf, Red has heightened senses even in human form. Tracking comes easily and naturally to her - if she wants something enough, she can find it almost intuitively. Her sense of smell and hearing are also amplified; she will be able to tell if something smells strange, for example, or if say, a fire was burning some distance away, she would be able to smell it before everyone else was. Likewise, it is very difficult to sneak up on her, as she will hear you.

First Person Sample:
Snow,

I'll be down with the supplies in the next couple of days. You really sure you want enough for a month? You know you're always welcome with me and Granny... even if we're not the most desirable people to hang around.

But this letter isn't about me. It's about you, Snow.

First, you turn thief. I don't blame you for stealing from the Queen - that's not the part that bothers me. It's t he second part, as now you're seeking seclusion because of this "Charming" guy, and I still don't think that it's a great idea. Solitude isn't the best, you know? If you've got something to fight for, you should fight for it and make sure you don't lose it. Especially not losing it. It may be the right thing to let him go, but what about you, Snow? Can you live with that?

Think about it. Even if you don't change your mind, it's worthy to consider. Just promise you've thought it through. No matter what, I'll understand - just make sure that you do.

Your friend,
Red

Third Person Sample: The fire sparked and came to life as her grandmother lit them, running two flints together in her fingers. But Red wasn't watching; she didn't see Granny, or the flames, or even the snow encased landscape around her. She saw nothing at all, her eyes glazed over. She was wearing her hood; partly for warmth, partly because it was a full moon.

It was odd to think about, really. To recollect. Spring was coming soon - she could tell, with the hint on the air, but even that was thanks to the one thing she never expected she would be. The fact she and Granny could both smell animals approaching, hear them before they could seen them, even when they were far off, was thanks to the wolf that was inside them. Well, Granny, not so much: for Red, a very real, potential threat. She held her cloak around her a little tighter as she glanced to the moon. Full.

It had been a few months, but it was always on a full moon when she thought of it more. She might have begun to try to handle her curse, to overcome the wolf and not let it dictate her life, with Granny's help. Snow had long since had to part ways with them. The thing was, even if she practiced, allowed herself to change, and somehow keep a hazy hold of that knowledge, it was frightening, now, when she knew she could not remember moments as she was something else, could not control her feet as it swayed towards what it wanted, blood, the kill, the nearest livestock. It was less of a thrill. It would never be a thrill. She'd already decided that for herself. She may grow accustomed to it, but she doubted it would be something she enjoyed. Albeit, even accept.

And that was what was bothering her, mainly, especially now.

"Granny?" she asked quietly.

Granny looked over her shoulder, half way lost between muttering nonsense to herself and sorting out dinner over the still flickering fame. Red took that as permission to continue.

"Do you think everyone's worthy of a second chance?"

Her grandmother considered. "Perhaps. It depends on the individual."

"Well, in the case, I- that... me," she admitted, quietly. "Am I... worthy of forgiveness? The wolf isn't something I asked for, or even knew I was doing, but that doesn't change the fact it was me."

"Red," Granny started, her tone half way between soft, and stern. "The fact you have to ask indicates that you are. The you I know, the stubborn, rebellious, kindhearted you, is your real self. Not a cold hearted beast who didn't bat an eyelid when they found out you were the one causing it. Why do you think I hid it from you, girl?"

Red smiled, somewhat wryly. "I know. To protect me."

"No and yes. Fact of it is, my girl, is that you have to forgive yourself. That's the only way you can move past it. It's not easy."

Red considered this. The words made sense. But how could she forgive herself? So many lost lives; so many deaths that were at her hand. It wasn't easy to shut them out, because they were innocents. They had not attacked her unprovoked; her responses were hardly only defensive or designed to protect. They were people she knew, families she knew that disappeared and she'd been careless. Reckless, and... stupid. Of course, she realised that now.

But she hadn't run. Even when she thought Peter was the wolf, she hadn't run. She faced it then, and she'd face it now, when it was herself. And Peter, when he thought it was him, faced what he thought was his curse with bravery. She should do the same.

"Forgive myself and change," she mused idly.

Granny only nodded, once again busying herself with the fire, and Red nodded slightly in return. "I can try." And she would. She would do something worthwhile with her curse. It was like she always said; if there was something she wanted, she was good at tracking it down.

She wanted to believe that she worth it, now that she knew the truth.
